Students learn to improvise and communicate musically while playing standard jazz repertoire. Various styles are introduced and explored, and varied instrumentation is welcomed and encouraged. Students are encouraged to write and arrange for their respective ensembles. Material covered includes traditional repertoire (Real Book tunes) and selections from jazz icons (Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk.) Combos provide students the opportunity to spontaneously create music that carries their own personality. One weekly coaching supplements one weekly student-led rehearsal. The groups will perform periodically on student recitals, masterclass opportunities, and occasional off-campus gigs. The course is available for 1 credit each semester.
